Tanzania Diaspora 4th Conference gets underway.

INVESTMENT and business opportunities are expected to be among the focal areas for this year’s Tanzania Diaspora Conference slated for August 23-24 here.

“These and other activities including cruising in MV Mapinduzi II vessel, will colour this year’s Diaspora gathering in Zanzibar, hosting the event for the second time consecutively,” said-Minister of State (State House and Revolutionary Council), Mr Issa Haji Ussi.

Flanked by the Director of International Cooperation and the coordination of Zanzibar Diaspora, Ms Adila Hilal Vuai, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to engage with the Diaspora.

“This is a bridge to link us with the private sector in developing our country.

It is my hope that we will have our goals achieved, “Mr Ussi, widely known as Gavu said, adding that the government’s priorities and Diaspora interests will be discussed.

Mr Ussi said the conference being organised jointly by the Union government through its ministry of foreign affairs and Zanzibar’s State House will also be an opportunity to share experience including cultural activities on ‘Zanzibar Night’ on the last day before closing to be officiated by retired President, Dr Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.

Former member of the Tanzania Diaspora in UK, Mr Hassan Khamis Hafidh, said many Tanzanians living abroad have gained skills, experience and capital, which is useful for redeployment in the country.

“Every citizen in and outside the country has a great role and ability to build both Zanzibar and the mainland. I challenge the Diasporas to bring back home what they have so far,” Mr Hafidh said.

According to Ms Vuai, the conference is set to attract more than 200 people, will help the Diaspora discuss on how they can contribute to the country’s development. The conference theme is “Patriotism for development, Home is a shield.”

It is estimated that Tanzania Diaspora abroad are more than a million people and the issue of dual citizenship and the right to vote during general elections are some of the frequently asked questions from them.
